The first edition was held as part of the Belgrade Student's Culture Festival in May 1996 under the name "TESLAFEST", which was one of the first electronic music festivals in Serbia and former Yugoslavia. It was held in the premises of the Belgrade Youth Centre (GAJ) in Belgrade. The second edition was organised by "Sestre" (The Sisters), a feminist student club at Belgrade University, and it was held in February 1997 under the name "SESTREFEST". The third edition took place in May 1998 under the name "Electrofestival" and again it was held at GAJ. Afterwards, it happened that Electronic Music Festival started to be organised by other student clubs, among them Sestre. Several years passed. In 2001, the Belgrade Student's Culture Festival started to be known as Synth Fest, with its own programme and organisators. This lasted for two years. In 2003, a new organisator of the festival was selected – "Muzika". In the meantime, the festival took place under different name – International Electronic Music Festival. In 2004, the first edition of Synth Fest was held under the name "Muzika Electronic Music Festival" and it was organised by "Muzika". The first show promoted on Clubland TV, a local cable TV channel. Afterwards, it took place every year as part of Belgrade's annual Student's Culture Festival. In 2007, a new organiser of this festival was selected – "Koncert" (the Concert). Since 2007, the festival name has been Electronic Music Festival. In 2013, the organisation of the festival has been taken over by "Synth" (a newly formed student club).
